Graduate school

A graduate school is the school that a college student may attend after completion of his or her undergraduate education in order to obtain a degree higher than a Bachelor's degree. Degrees range from master's degrees (M.A., M.S./M.Sc., M.Ed., etc.), doctorate (Ph.D., Ed.D., D.A., D.Sc., D.M.A., Th.D., etc.) or other postgraduate qualification, such as a graduate certificate. There are also a variety of subject fields in which one goes to graduate school for: Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Computer science, Philosophy, Economics, etc. The term graduate school, however, does not refer to medical school and only occasionally refers to law school or business school. Graduate schools are also a part of quaternary education, together with postdoctorate research.

This term is an Americanism. In Australia, postgraduate education is often (but not always) offered by the same departments and teachers at a university as the undergraduate courses, and at the same institution as the undergraduate courses. By contrast, in America, it is common for postgraduate courses to be offered either by a separate institution, or subdivision of an institution, than the undergraduate courses, in the sense that a student is part of a graduate administrative division instead of an undergraduate one. Typically, graduate students in areas also offered to undergraduates take classes from the same department.
