Graham Turner
Graham Turner (born 1947) is an English football manager who began in 1977 at the age of 30 with Shrewsbury Town in the Third Division. He guided the club to the Third Division championship in 1978-79 to secure a place in the Second Division for the very first time. Against all odds Shrewsbury survived at this level for ten years and Graham Turner was soon being targeted by bigger clubs. In the summer of 1984 he was lured away from Shrewsbury to take charge of Aston Villa in the First Division. But his spell at Villa was unproductive and he was sacked in September 1986 with the club bottom of the First Division just five seasons after winning the European Cup.
Within weeks of being sacked by Aston Villa, Graham Turner was named as the new manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers - who had just been relegated to the Fourth Division for the first time, and were plagued with massive debts. He guided them to a place in the Fourth/Third Division promotion/relegation playoffs but they lost to Aldershot and were consigned to another season in the Fourth Division. They won the Fourth Division championship in 1987-88 thanks to a total of 37 league goals (and 50 in all competitions) by striker Steve Bull. A second successive promotion followed in 1988-89 when Turner guided Wolves to the Third Division title. But Turner was unable to secure a third promotion and left in March 1994, by which time Wolves were mid table in the new Division One.
Since June 1995, Graham Turner has been manager of Hereford United. In his first season they qualified for the Division Three playoffs and just missed out on promotion to Division Two. But a defeat to arch rivals Brighton on the last day of the 1996-97 season saw them relegated to the Conference after 25 years of league football. Turner is still in charge of Hereford after ten years although they have yet to regain their league status.
