Gratian the Elder
Gratian was the father of the Roman emperors, Valentinian and Valens and the grandfather of Gratian.
He was sent to Roman Britain in the 340s AD and given the title comes or count in command of a field army. The crisis that precipitated this is not known however.
He began his career as an ordinary soldier but was selected as being officer material, being appointed a tribune and then comes rei militaris in Africa and Gaul.
