Griffin Park

Since 1904, Griffin Park has been the home of Brentford Football Club. It is known for being the only English league football ground to have a pub on each corner. It is also beneath the flightpath of Heathrow Airport, and because of this, the rooves of the stadium are Europe's largest outdoor advertising space.

Location & Directions

Griffin Park is easily accessed by car and public_transport, however some parking restrictions apply on matchdays. It is situated in a predominantly residential area (late-Victorian terraced housing and post-war council estates), although a number of major corporations (including Glaxo) have offices nearby on the Great West Road (A4).

Arriving by Public Transport

Griffin Park is well-served by a range of public transport services. The following paragraphs will first outline the services available then later give directions from the nearest stations. South Ealing, Northfields and Boston Manor tube stations (Piccadilly_Line) are all within 15-20 minutes' walk of Griffin Park (approx 1 mile). The Piccadilly Line provides a fast and frequent link to both Central_London and Heathrow Airport and interchanges with high-speed rail services at King's Cross. Gunnersbury station (District_Line and North_London_Line) is 1½ miles away.

Brentford has its own railway station, Brentford Central (now just known as Brentford). SWT (South West Trains) operates services from Brentford to London Waterloo, Clapham_Junction, Hounslow, Feltham, Staines and Reading. This service provides a useful interchange at Reading for longer-distance rail services to the Midlands, the South and West, and Wales, and also at Clapham Junction for services to the South and South East.

For alternative National_Rail services to Griffin Park, there are a number of choices. From Gunnersbury, the North_London_Line interlinks with other transport services at Richmond (SWT), Willesden Junction (Silverlink, Bakerloo), West Hampstead (Jubilee, Thameslink), Highbury & Islington (Victoria_Line, WAGN), Stratford (Central, Jubilee, DLR, One Great Eastern), West Ham (C2C), and Canning Town (DLR, London_City_Airport). Richmond station itself is directly accessibly by bus (route 65) to Griffin Park. At the opposite end of route 65 is Ealing Broadway (Central, District, Thames/Western).

From South Ealing station: Turn right out of station into Ealing Road. Follow this road until you come to the A4 (busy dual carriageway road running across you) after about 10 minutes. Turn right here then cross the road at the Pedestrian Crossing. Take the side road is pretty much facing you (with a large pub on the corner - one of many in Brentford!). At the end of this street, you should come to a set of stairs leading up to a footbridge. Cross the footbridge and follow the street up to the Royal Oak Pub. Left here for entrance into New Road (home) stand, ahead for Brook Road (home), Braemar Road (home) and Ealing Road (away) stands. For the last two, you then need to turn next left into Braemar Road at The Griffin Pub. [15-20 minutes]

From Brentford station (arrivals from Reading, Staines, Feltham, Hounslow, etc.): Turn right out of Station into Orchard Road. At the top, turn right into Windmill Road then first left into Hamilton Road. At the Royal Oak Pub, continue ahead for New Road (home) stand, or turn right for Brook Road (home), Braemar Road (home) and Ealing Road (away) stands. For the last two, you then need to turn next left into Braemar Road at The Griffin Pub. [5-10 minutes]

From Brentford station (arrivals from Chiswick, Barnes, Putney, Wansworth, Clapham Junction, Vauxhall, Waterloo): Turn left after leaving station into an alley way. At the top of the alleyway (stairs), turn right then left into Hamilton Road.

From Gunnersbury Station: Hop on a 237 or 267 bus from outside the station. Alight at Watermans Arts Centre/McDonalds (the foot of Ealing Road). If you have a Travelcard, show it to the driver as it is valid for travel on buses in London.

Arriving by Car

The easiest routes to Griffin Park are the M4, A205 (South Circular), A316 (M3), A4 (Great West Road), M40/A40 (Western Avenue) and A406 (North Circular). For a map of the vicinity, see the external links, below.

From the M4 (eastbound): leave at Junction 2 and follow the A4 until Chiswick Roundabout (1 mile). Here, turn full circle on the roundabout and take the A4 (westbound) back the way you came (signposted Hounslow/Staines/The West/M4). After approximately one mile you will arrive at Junction 2 of the M4 again. Here, stay on the A4 by taking the right-hand fork. You will come to a set of lights with a Texaco garage (PFS) to your left (½ mile); turn left here into Ealing Road (B455) and the floodlights will come into view. (See also directions from M25, below).

From the A40/M40 (eastbound): at the end of the M40, continue towards London on the A40 and take the 3rd exit (Polish War Memorial). At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit, A4180 southbound (signposted Hayes, Greenford, Heathrow). Follow for 1 mile until the next roundabout. Here, take 3rd exit, the A312 ("The Parkway"). Follow the A312 for approx 5 miles until you reach the A4 at Cranford. Here, turn left onto the A4 towards London. Follow the A4 for another 5 miles. After reaching the elevated section (of the M4, above you), turn right onto the B455 (Ealing Road). The floodlights will be within view and the ground is to your right, after passing over the railway bridge. (See also directions from M25, below).

From the M3 (eastbound): at the end of the M3, continue on the A316 for approximately 7 miles, where you should leave the road at Richmond and take the the left-hand fork, the A307 (Kew Road) towards Kew. At Kew (1 mile), the road merges with and becomes the A205 (South Circular). After crossing Kew Bridge, turn left at the first set of lights onto the A315. After 1 mile, turn right at the McDonalds into Ealing Road (B455). Braemar Road is the second on the left. (See also directions from M25, below).

From the M25: The M25 is London's orbital motorway and intercepts all major approaches into the capital. Thus, if you are a visiting supporting travelling by road, you are likely to have to use the M25 at some point before joining one of the three arterial routes shown above (M4 is by far the simplest). Make sure you are travelling in the correct direction (junction numbers increase clockwise from the Dartford Crossing). If you are heading towards Heathrow, then you should be going in the right direction. The North Circular (A406, below) is a feasible alternative to the M25 for traffic arriving from the North and East (M1, A1/A41, A10, M11, A12, A127, A13).

From the M1 (southbound): If travelling on the M1, you can either leave to join the M25 at Junction 6A (signposted Heathrow) and follow the guidance for M25 (above), or continue on the M1 until its terminus at Brent_Cross. Here, you should join the westbound A406 (North Circular Road), signposted Wembley. Keep on the A406 until Chiswick Roundabout (the end of the A406). Take the A4 westbound (signposted Hounslow/Staines/The West/M4) and after approximately one mile you will arrive at Junction 2 of the M4. Here, stay on the A4 by taking the right-hand fork. You will come to a set of lights with a Texaco garage (PFS) to your left (½ mile); turn left here into Ealing Road (B455) and the floodlights will come into view.

From the A205 (westbound): After crossing the Thames at Kew Bridge, turn left at the first set of lights onto the A315. After 1 mile, turn right at the McDonalds into Ealing Road (B455). Braemar Road is the second on the left.

From the A406 (westbound): Follow A406 until its terminus at Chiswick Roundabout.
