Grocer
A grocer is a dealer in staple foodstuffs -- meats, produce, dairy products, etc. -- and other household supplies. Such goods are, hence, groceries.
Sometimes used when greengrocer is meant.
Nowadays, the term is all but synonymous with supermarket, since the early supermarkets began as chains of grocery stores.
The Grocer is a nickname in British politics referring to Edward Heath.
Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was the daughter of a Lincolnshire grocer.
