Guillermo Endara

Guillermo David Endara Galimany (born 12 May 1936 in Panama City) is a Panamanian politician.

Endara was elected President of Panama in May 1989 by 62,5% of the vote, against 24,9% of the vote for the party of strongman Manuel Noriega, who refused to recognise the election. In the aftermath of the invasion of Panama in December 1989 by the armed forces of the United States (see: Operation Just Cause), he was sworn in as the legitimate president on 20 December 1989 and served until 1 September 1994.

In 1990 he was one of the founding members of the Arnulfista Party but, in later years, distanced himself from the party on account of differences of opinion with party chairman (and later President of the Republic) Mireya Moscoso.

He ran in the 2004 Panamanian presidential election as the candidate of the Solidarity Party and conceded defeat after finishing 17 percentage points behind Martín Torrijos.
