HMS Temeraire

Four ships of the British Royal Navy have been called HMS Temeraire:

  1. The first Temeraire was a French 74-gun ship of the line captured in 1759 and sold in 1784.
  2. The second Temeraire, a second-rate of 98 guns launched in 1798, was second in the line behind HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. Famous as the subject of two paintings by J. M. W. Turner, one showing her at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, the other showing her being towed to the breaker's yard in 1838.
  3. The third Temeraire was an iron-hulled screw-propelled ship launched in 1876, renamed Indus II in 1904, Akbar in 1915, and sold 1921.
  4. The fourth Temeraire was a battleship launched in 1907 and sold in 1921.
  5. A fifth Temeraire was to be a 42,500-ton battleship. Laid down in June 1939, construction was suspended in October, and cancelled in 1944.
  6. HMS Temeraire is now the Directorate of Naval Physical Training and Sport(DNPTS) in Portsmouth (More information can be found at www.royal-navy.mod.uk).
