Halls Creek (population 2005 1300) is a small town situated in the East Kimberley of Western Australia. It is located between the towns of Fitzroy Crossing and Warmun (Turkey Creek) on the Great Northern Highway (Highway One). The main industry is cattle ranching and there is also a minor gold mining industry. Nearby points of interest are the Wolfe Creek Meteorite Site , the second largest in the world after one in Arizona (U.S.A.)and the Bungle Bungle Mountains. The most productive diamond mine, Lake Argyle, is situated North of the Town, on the way to Kununurra, a town sitauted on Lake Argyle, a man made lake some six Sydney Harbours in size.
Halls Creek has moved from its original location due to flooding in the older town. It was originally established as a gold mining town, but is also home to the indigenous Jaru (Djar-u) and Kija (gKid-ja) peoples as well as some Tjurabalan peoples from the desert south of the town (Lake Gregory and Mulan (Mullen). It has a shire council which is one of the largest in Australia by area.
