Hans and Franz

Hans and Franz was a skit on the comedy hit show Saturday Night Live starring Kevin Nealon and Dana Carvey. In the skit, the actors improvised muscle-bound jocks mimicking Arnold Schwarzenegger right down to the padding for fake muscles, gray sweats, weight belts, and fake Austrian accents. The two then proceed to denigrate others for not being strong and then striking body-builder poses.

Some famous lines from the skit include:

  • "I am Hans, and I am Franz"
  • "we are here to pump you up"
  • "girliemen"

This skit was on of the more popular on Saturday Night Live and the characters and their catch phrases entered popular American culture. When Arnold Schwarzenegger entered politics he referred to the skits himself makes references to these parodies of himself as he does to his own movies, such as the use of the phrase "girlieman" and "pump you up". He even used the "girlieman" term to refer to politicians in speeches during his service as governor of California.
