Harrison is located at 40°44'45" North, 74°9'18" West (40.745951, -74.155096).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.4 km² (1.3 mi²). 3.2 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.82% water. It is one of the favorite places for international students - primarily Indians - attending the New Jersey Institute of Technology in neighboring Newark to live. The town has a sizeable population of such students.
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 14,424 people, 5,136 households, and 3,636 families residing in the town. The population density is 4,564.9/km² (11,811.1/mi²). There are 5,254 housing units at an average density of 1,662.8/km² (4,302.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 66.10% White, 0.98% African American, 0.40% Native American, 11.89% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 15.96% from other races, and 4.65% from two or more races. 36.97% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 5,136 households out of which 33.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.8% are married couples living together, 13.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% are non-families. 22.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.81 and the average family size is 3.27.
In the town the population is spread out with 21.5% under the age of 18, 10.6% from 18 to 24, 36.8% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 10.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 104.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $41,350, and the median income for a family is $48,489. Males have a median income of $33,069 versus $26,858 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,490. 12.4% of the population and 10.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.5% of those under the age of 18 and 10.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
