Henry Heimlich

Dr Henry J. Heimlich (b. 1920) was an American physician, and the inventor of the Heimlich manoeuver.

Heimlich was born on February 3 1920 in Wilmington, Delaware. He graduated from Cornell University with a B.A. in 1941, and took his M.D. from Cornell Medical College in 1943. He is best known for his invention of the treatment for choking named after him. He first published his findings on the use of this maneuver in 1974, and within a week it had been used to save a choking victim. Since then, the manoeuver is estimated to have saved 50,000 people from choking or drowning in the United States alone.

Heimlich is currently doing research on AIDS and cancer. He is also teaching new ways to use his maneuver on asthma patients and people with cystic fibrosis.
