Henry Hugh Clifford
The Hon. Henry Hugh Clifford (VC, KCMG, CB) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
He was 28 years old, and a Lieutenant in the 1st Bn., The Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort's Own), British Army during the Crimean War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.
On 5 November 1854 at the Battle of Inkerman, Crimea, Lieutenant Clifford led one of the charges, killing one of the enemy with his sword, disabling another and saving the life of a soldier.
He later achieved the rank of Major General.
