Herfast
Herfast (d. 1084) was the first Lord Chancellor of England, serving in that capacity from 1068 to 1070. Born in Normandy, France, he joined William the Conqueror during the Norman invasion of England, and was appointed head of the royal writing office after the Battle of Hastings. After serving as Lord Chancellor, he became Bishop of East Anglia; however, he came into conflict with the Abbey of Bury St Edmunds, and when the case was brought forward, the Archbishop of Canterbury (Lanfranc) ruled against Herfast. He died in 1084.
