Hersbruck

Hersbruck is a city in Mittelfranken/Bavaria, belonging to the district Nürnberger Land. Famous for the late-gothic artwork of the Hersbruck altar, the "Hirtenmuseum" and the beautiful landscape of the "Hersbrucker Schweiz"

History

Hersbruck was founded 976 when there was build a castle near a bridge. The name of the city probable comes from Haderihesprucga, the bridge of Haderich.

In the middleage the town was lain at the golden street from Nuremberg to Praha, which caused economical Upswing for Hersbruck. 1297 Hersbruck was given the right to be a city, from 1504 on, the city belonged to the Area of the Empire-city Nuremberg and came 1806 to Bavaria.

During the Nazi-Regime Hersbruck was a outside camp of Flossenbürg concentration camp. The camp had about 10,000 prisoners, about 4,000 of them died in Hersbruck.

Culture

In Hersbruck the Deutsche Hirtenmuseum , the only museum in Germany, which shows the working and lving conditions of shepherds.

In 2004 the Frankenalb-Therme (http://www.frankenalbtherme.de) was opened. It offers next to a Thermal- and a joke bath area with a slide (length 82 metres) also a large Saunaarea including several outside saunas.
