Historic American Buildings Survey
The Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) is an office of the National Park Service. It was originally part of the Works Progress Administration, aimed at employing out-of-work architects to document historic buildings. Documentation consists of measured drawings, archival photographs, and written reports. Today much of the work is done by student teams during the summer. HABS has merged with the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER), the purpose of which is to document historic mechanical and engineering artifacts.
The permanent collection is housed at the Library of Congress. As a branch of the U.S. Federal Government, its created works are in the public domain.
