Holt

(Redirected from Holt, Norfolk, England)
This article is about the town in Norfolk, for the village in Dorset see Holt, Dorset.

Holt is a market town in the county of Norfolk, England. It lies on high ground approximately 3 miles south of the North Sea coast at Cley-next-the-sea and it is twenty-one miles north-north-west of Norwich. Holt is noted for the abundance of Georgian buildings, many of its medieval buildings having been destroyed in a fire in 1708. The Norman parish church is dedicated to St Andrew.

Holt is known for Gresham's School, an independent school founded in 1555, whose alumni include Britten, Auden, Sir John Reith and James Dyson.

One mile to the east of the town centre is a terminus for the North Norfolk Railway, the other being Sheringham. The original (town centre) railway station was served by the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway, which closed in 1963.

Holt is a common last name, of Germanic origin and meaning "wood."
