Horacio de la Costa
Reverend Father Horacio de la Costa, S.J. was a Provinical General of the Society of Jesus assigned to the Philippines. He entered the Society of Jesus on June 20, 1935. He was ordained on March 24, 1924 at Woodstock, Maryland , USA. He obtained his doctorate in history at Harvard University in 1951. In WW2 he was imprisoned for two months at Fort Santiago by the Japanese for assisting the resistance. He assisted Fr. John F. Hurley , the Jesuit superior in bringing clothes and medicines to American and Filipino guerillas. For this he was awarded the Medal of Freedom by the US government in 1946.
He was the Jesuit Provincial Superior to the Philippine Province from 1965 to 1970. In 1971 to 1975 he was assistant to the Father General in Rome. He was an accomplished historian and taught at Ateneo de Manila(Dean, College of Arts & Sciences), Sacred Heart College, Manila , and University of London. He is an authority in Philippine History and authored books which have become standard references.
