Hraunfossar

The waterfalls Hraunfossar of the river Hvítá (Borgarfjörđur) in the west of Iceland seem to come out directly of a lava field, the Hallmundarhraun which was caused by an eruption of one of the volcanoes lying under the glacier Langjökull. Hence the name, hraun meaning lava in Icelandic. There are a lot of rivulets streaming out of the lava at a length of about 900 meters. The Hraunfossar are situated near Húsafell and Reykholt in the west of the island.

Directly beside them, there is another waterfall called Barnafoss. Its name, the waterfall of the children, comes from an accident which is said to have taken place here in former times. There was a natural bridge over the waterfall and two children seem to have fallen from it into the river and died. Afterwards, the mother had the bridge destroyed.
