The Hvannadalshnjúkur is a volcano in the south of Iceland. It measures up to 2119 m and is therefore also the highest mountain of the island.
The volcano is to be found at the limits of the Skaftafell National Park and it lies under the glacier Öræfajökull.
The name of the glacier means glacier of disaster. And it was so named after some major volcanic eruptions in the Middle Ages which put an end to a lot of farms in the region.
It is possible to hike onto the Hvannadalshnjúkur by crossing the glacier.
