In chemistry, a hydrazone is a compound with the structure R2C=NNR2, differing from a ketone or aldehyde by the replacement of the double bonded oxygen with the =NNR2 functional group. They are formed usually by the action of hydrazine on ketones or aldehydes.

Use

The formation of aromatic hydrazone derivatives is used to measure the concentration of light aldehydes and ketones in gases. These compounds are derivatized by dinitrophenylhydrazine , usually coated on a silica sorbent inside an adsorption cartridge. The hydrazones are then eluted and analyzed by HPLC using a simple UV detector.
