I Am My Own Wife
I Am My Own Wife is a play by Doug Wright which examines the life of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf , born Lothar Berfelde, a German transvestite who killed her father, and survived the Nazi and Communist regimes in East Berlin. It is based on von Mahlsdorf's autobiography, I Am My Own Woman: The Outlaw Life of Charlotte Von Mahlsdorf, Berlin's Most Distinguished Transvestite.
The one-man play opened on Broadway in 2003 starring Jefferson Mays in some forty roles. It won the 2004 Tony Award for Best Play and the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Mays won the 2004 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play.
