Ian Athfield

Ian Charles Athfield, born in Christchurch, 15 July, 1940 is a New Zealand architect. Athfield graduated with a Diploma of Architecture from the Auckland School of Architecture in 1963 and was a principle partner in setting up Athfield Architects in 1968. He established his reputation with small-scale domestic buildings during the 1970s. Additive plans, fragmented forms and allusions to the traditions of New Zealand colonial architecture characterise designs such as Athfield house , Wellington (begun 1968), and Cox house , Wellington (1975). In 1976 he won first prize in the International Competition for the Urban Environment of Developing Countries with a community-based project for rehousing Manila slum dwellers.

Notable works include:

  • Athfield house (begun 1968)
  • Cox house (1975)
  • Wellington City Library (1991)
