Illinois State Route 56
Illinois State Route 56 is a state road that runs from the intersection of Illinois State Route 47 at U.S. Highway 30 in Sugar Grove east to the multiplexed U.S. 12/U.S. 20/U.S. 45 combination (Mannheim Road) by Bellwood, distance of 34 miles (55 km).
Illinois 56 parallels Interstate 88 (Ronald Reagan Memorial Tollway) for its entire length and merges with it at Illinois State Route 31, making it the only state road to be marked as a toll road. Only Illinois State Route 5 has ever had this distinction. After crossing the Fox River, Illinois 56 exits the tollway and terminates in Sugar Grove.
Route 56 is called Butterfield Road for its entire length east of Illinois 31. It serves the major cities of Wheaton, Downers Grove and Oak Brook, and runs with the Illinois Technology and Research Corridor. It also forms the southern border of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia.
