Indian Head is a town located in Charles County, Maryland. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,422. It has long been the site of a naval base specializing in gun and rocket propellants. The name of the base has varied over the years from Naval Propellant Plant, to Naval Ordnance Station, to the present Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC). Advanced research in energetics takes place at NSWC. NSWC is the successor organization to the Naval Ordnance Laboratory. The name Indian Head is believed to derive from the general shape of the peninsula, Corwallis Neck, that comprises the naval base.

Geography

Indian Head is located at 38°35'52" North, 77°9'25" West (38.597781, -77.156926).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.2 km² (1.2 mi²). 3.2 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 3,422 people, 1,222 households, and 888 families residing in the town. The population density is 1,074.2/km² (2,792.7/mi²). There are 1,311 housing units at an average density of 411.5/km² (1,069.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 55.64% White, 38.08% African American, 1.78% Native American, 1.43% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 2.57% from two or more races. 1.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,222 households out of which 44.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.5% are married couples living together, 22.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.3% are non-families. 21.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.80 and the average family size is 3.26.

In the town the population is spread out with 33.0% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 34.3% from 25 to 44, 16.7% from 45 to 64, and 7.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 94.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $42,702, and the median income for a family is $48,375. Males have a median income of $35,625 versus $31,451 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,778. 11.5% of the population and 9.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.9% of those under the age of 18 and 11.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
