Indian Museum

The Indian Museum was founded by Dr. Nathaniel Wallich a Danish botanist at Serampore (original called Frederischnagore) near Calcutta in 1814. It was the first museum of its kind in Asia. From 1814 - 1878 it was located at the premises of Asiatic Society of 1, Park Street, Calcutta.

The Indian Museum in Kolkata is currently located at 27 Jawaharlal Nehru Road, Kolkata, 700016, in a resplendent mansion and exhibits among others: an Egyptian mummy, the Buddhist stupa from Bharhut, the Buddha's ashes, the Ashoka pillar, whose three lion symbol became the official emblem of the Republic of India, fossil skeletons of prehistoric animals like dinosaurs, art collection, rare antiques, collection of meteorites etc.

It opens 10.00 to 17.00 daily except Mondays.
