IndyCar

(Redirected from Indycars)
Champcars

IndyCar is most often used as a generic term for open-wheel auto racing in the United States National Championship, and comes from the name of the Indianapolis 500, the best known and long most-popular open-wheel auto race in North America.

Prior to 1979 the term IndyCar usually referred to cars raced in USAC-sanctioned races. From 1980 to 1995 the term referred to Champcars, formerly Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART). From 1996 to the present, the term can refer either to Champcars or the Indy Racing League (IRL), however, the Indy Racing League has copyrighted the name "Indycar".

In late 2003 CART declared bankruptcy and was sold to another entity called Open Wheel Racing Series (OWRS), and the series title was officially changed to Champcar.
