Institute of Public Affairs
The Institute for Public Affairs, (IPA) is a conservative think tank in Australia.
The Institute, although formally independent of any political party, is often associated in an informal capacity with some elements of the Liberal Party of Australia. An ex-Hawke Labor minister, Gary Johns , has also joined the ranks of the IPA.
The Institute is funded by a number of large corporations, including Rupert Murdoch's News Limited. News Limited-owned newspapers, especially The Australian, frequently donate editorial space to writers from the IPA.
The Institute states that it believes in "the free market of ideas, the free flow of capital, a limited and efficient government, the rule of law, and representative democracy."
The Institute in its publications strongly disputes the science behind global warming. Some of its other pet topics include the need for a relaxing of economic deregulation (particularly regarding industrial relations and the environment), support of the privatisation of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the abolition of Aboriginal welfare programs, and the sinister nature of Non-Governmental Organisations . It is frequently critical of a wide variety of NGOs. Critics of the IPA assert that its chief purpose is to act as an apologist for its various big business clients.
The IPA is headed by Dr Mike Nahan .
