Irish Brigade (French)

Irish Brigade was formed from the Irish soldiers who embarked for France following the Williamite war in Ireland with the Jacobites, in accordance with the provisions of the Treaty of Limerick in 1691. The evacuation has entered history as the flight of the Wild Geese. In 1692, The Irish Brigade of the French Army consisted of 5 regiments; Mountcashel, Butler, Fielding, O'Brien and Dillon, with a total strength of 6,039 men.

For the next hundred years, until the French Revolution, many of the Wild Geese and their descendants served France in the Irish Brigade.

The motto of the brigade was "Remember Limerick and Saxon Faith" or sometimes "Remember Limerick and Saxon perfidy"
