Isidore the Farmer

Saint Isidore the Farmer (c1070 - May 15, 1130) is the Catholic patron Saint of farmers and of Madrid. In Spanish, his name is San Ysidro Labrador - San Ysidro, California is named after him. He is also known as Saint Isidore the Laborer. He was canonized in 1622.

Isidore was born in Madrid to very poor parents. He became a servant to a wealthy Madrid landowner John de Vargas who would later make him bailiff of his entire estate of Lower Caramanca. He married Maria Torribia and had a son who fell into a well as a child. The child was saved it is said by the prayers of Isidore and his parents.

He was known for his goodness which he extended to both the poor and the animal kingdom. He is known to have performed many miracles in his lifetime. His wife Maria also was made a saint and is known as Santa Maria de la Cabeza .
