Jamesway
Jamesway was a chain of discount department stores that was founded in Jamestown, New York in 1961. At its peak, the company operated 90 stores throughout the mid-Atlantic region of the United States and employed close to 6,000 workers.
Starting in the early 1990's, Jamesway began to face increased competition from such chains as Bradlees, Caldor, and Ames, and would end up filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1993.
In 1995, the chain would emerge from Chapter 11, only to once again be hard hit by competition, this time from Wal-Mart, which began opening stores in many of the areas containing Jamesway stores. Unable to compete, Jamesway was once again forced into bankruptcy and would close its doors in December of that year.
