• Joginder Jaswant Singh new Chief of Army Staff: General Joginder Jaswant Singh becomes the first Sikh Chief of Army Staff . He takes charge as the 22nd Army Chief at New Delhi from General Nirmal Chander Vij who retired after 43 years of service.

• Goa BJP Government in minority: The BJP-led government in Goa headed by Manohar Parrikar is reduced to a minority after four BJP MLAs resign from the 40-member House. While the Congress has staked its claim to form the new government, Parrikar has said he will prove his majority.

• Stampede at Satara, Maharashtra: At least 35 people, mostly women and children, were feared killed and over 50 injured in a stampede at a religious fair in Wai in Satara district of western Maharashtra on Tuesday afternoon. The stampede occurred during the annual Mandra Devi Yatra at the Mandra Devi temple, located on a hill in Wai.
