Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust
The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust runs the docks near Bombay in New Bombay, India. The port lies on the mainland, opposite the city of Bombay across the Thane Creek. The port is run by the Central government of India. The port was created to alleviate the load on the terminals in Bombay and save on octroi charges imposed by the Bombay Municipal Corporation. JNPT also has daily ferry launches to Gateway of India. The Central Industrial Security Force guards this installation.
It is well connected to major highways and rail networks in India. The closest suburban railhead is Belapur CBD. The port handles 65% of India's container traffic has a berthing period of 37 hours which is considered to be very long.
JNPT encompasses an area of 10 sq km but access roads are poor with only a two lane road servicing it which is often in a bad shape miring many trucks in the slush. New terminals are to be set up to alleviate the current problems, but it would only be ready by 2008.
