Jean-Pierre Melville
Jean-Pierre Melville ( born October 20, 1917 Paris, France) is a noted French director born under the name Jean-Pierre Grumbach. He later adopted the pseudonym 'Melville' as a tribute to his favorite American author Herman Melville. Melville served in World War 2 and fought in Operation Dragoon. When he returned from the war he applied for 'une carte d'assistant metteur en scène'(license to become a director?) but was refused. Without this support, he decided to direct his movies by his own means.
His unique style lead to the development of the French new wave film movement.
