Rare reuses elements from two of their previous N64-titles Goldeneye 007 (the shooter part) and Banjo-Kazooie (the platform elements and design).

It stars Juno (human), Vela (human), Lupus (dog), and Floyd (robot) as playable characters. The antagonist is Mizar, whose drone army of ants have colonised several planets and enslaved a race known as Tribals. The aim of the game is to liberate the Tribals whom are spread throughout the levels and ultimately defeat Mizar.

All of the main characters' names (except Floyd's) are related to astronomy.
