Jimmy McIlroy
Jimmy McIlroy
Born in Lambeg on the 25th of October 1931, Jimmy McIlroy is one of Burnley's greatest ever players.
Burnley manager Frank Hill was responsible for signing the young McIlroy from Belfast based club, Glentoran. McIlroy made his debut against Sunderland at Roker park in October 1950, just four days before his 19th Birthday. He had replaced future manager Harry Potts, who had just been sold to Everton
McIlroy played in one of the two great periods in Burnley's history, including the 1959/60 season, when they became English League champions, appeared in the 1962 FA Cup Final and featured in European Competitions.
He played 439 times for the Clarets and scored 116 goals for the club. He is also Burnley's most capped international, appearing for his native Northern Ireland on 55 occasions.
His transfer to Stoke City was seen as an act of treachery by Burnley fans.
After his time at Stoke, he had a period managing Oldham and then a few weeks in charge of Bolton bringing an end to a great footballing career.
The stand at the eastern end of Turf Moor , rebuilt in the late 1990's after the Beehole End was demolished, has recently been renamed The Jimmy McIlroy Stand.
