Johann Anton Güldenstädt
Johann Anton Güldenstädt (April 26, 1745 - March 23, 1781) was a German naturalist and explorer.
Güldenstädt was born in Riga and studied medicine at the University of Frankfurt, obtaining his doctorate in 1767. In the following year he joined the expedition sent by Catherine II of Russia to explore the Russian empire. Güldenstädt travelled to the Caucasus and Astrakhan regions, returning to St Petersburg in March 1775. The results of the expedition were published after his death by Peter Simon Pallas in Reisen durch Russland und im Caucasischen Gebürge (Travels in Russia and the Mountains of the Caucasus) (1787-91).
