John Bond (footballer)

John Bond is a former football player and manager. Currently a coach at Wigan Athletic F.C.. He is father to Kevin Bond, who is also a former footballer.

Bond began his career at West Ham United F.C., and made nearly 400 appearances for the club, playing as a highly rated full back.

In 19?? he joined Torquay United F.C., for whom he made 129 appearances before retiring.

He began his coaching career with Gillingham F.C., but was soon appointed manager at AFC Bournemouth. His successes at the club led to him being appointed Norwich City F.C. manager in 1973, replacing Ron Saunders.

Bond continued his successes at Norwich, signing great players such as Martin Peters. The signing of the 1966 World Cup Hero was a masterstroke and not only secured Norwich' promotion back into the old Division One but provided inspiration and experience for Norwich's youth team programme.

After continued success with limited funds, Bond was offered the managerial position at Manchester City F.C.. Bond moved on 11 October 1980 taking John Benson and John Sainty with him. He was replaced by Ken Brown as Norwich manager.

Bond only had limited success at Manchester City reaching the FA Cup final in 1981. He was sacked in 1983 and has since managed Burnley (1983-84), Swansea (1984-85), Birmingham City (1986-87), Shrewsbury (1991-93) and Witton Albion (1998-99).

At the beginning of the 1999/2000 season Bond joined Wigan Athletic as a coach, a role he still holds.
