John Doyle (soccer)

John Doyle (born April 16, 1966) played as a central defender for five years for the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer from the start of the inaugural season in 1996 until his retirement in 2000.

Doyle played college soccer at the University of San Francisco and then in the APSL with the San Francisco Bay Blackhawks . He stayed in the Bay Area, becoming the first player in Clash's history in 1996. He was then named MLS's first Defender of the Year. John scored 11 goals and 15 assists in his time in the league.

Doyle got the first of his 58 caps for the US national team on May 30, 1987 against Canada. He played for the US in the 1988 Summer Olympics and the 1990 World Cup in Italy.

After his retirement from the Earthquakes, John worked as TV and radio color commentator for the Earthquakes. In 2004 he was hired as assisant coach for the Quakes, replacing Dominic Kinnear who was promoted as head coach after Frank Yallop's departure to coach the Canadian national team.
