John Facenda
John Facenda (August 8 1913 - September 25 1984) was a broadcaster and sports announcer.
A sweltering August day in nineteen hundred and thirteen brought to the forefront of football announcing a man whose presence was felt but not seen. The source of this thunderous vocal talent was named John by his parents but to those in the NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE, he will forever be known as THE VOICE.
Born in Portsmouth, Virginia, John Facenda is best known as the voice-over announcer for NFL Films. From 1967 until his death, Mr. Facenda narrated "NFL Films Presents," a long-running series of professional football highlights and behind-the-scenes footage, where Facenda's rhapsodies about the elegance and grace of football became as legendary as the "frozen tundra of Lambeau Field," a term he coined.
Facenda started out in radio, working at WIP Radio in Philadelphia from 1935 to 1952. He began to work in television, at WCAU, a Philadelphia television station, in 1948. He died of cancer.
