Joseph McDowell (Colonel)
Joseph McDowell (1756–1801) was an American planter, soldier, and statesman from Winchester, Virginia. His family moved to North Carolina when he was two years old. He was a colonel of the state's militia during the Revolution, and later served in the U.S. Congress from 1797 to 1799. He died on February 5, 1801 in Burke County, North Carolina. His cousin, Joseph McDowel, and his son Joseph Jefferson McDowell also served in the congress. Hailed as the hero of the Battle of King's Mountain, McDowell County, North Carolina and McDowell County, West Virginia were named in his honor.
