Kachikoshi

Kachikoshi (勝ち越し) means a majority of wins in a professional sumo championship.

In sumo, promotion and demotion depends on performance in the previous 15 day tournament, where senior wrestlers (Juryo and above) compete once a day, and junior wrestlers (Makushita and below) seven times over the duration of the championship. The first aim of the majority of wrestlers is to make kachikoshi (a majority of wins or a score of 8-7 of better for a senior wrestler), which usually guarantees a promotion up the ranks. In contrast makekoshi almost always leads to demotion down the ranks.

The size of any promotion up the ranks will take into account how good a kachikoshi score was achieved, so for example a junior wrestler achieving a 7-0 score may be promoted by the equivalent of one full division whereas a 4-3 score will result in promotion of only a few ranks.

At the top, in Sanyaku, kachikoshi can be regarded at the minimum required to retain one's rank. Promotion from Komusubi to Sekiwake can depend on other wrestlers' performances, unless a score of at least 10-5 is achieved, which is usually sufficient to guarantee Sekiwake status.

There are special rules for Ozeki and Yokozuna promotion, which are outlined in the relevant sections. They are well above a simple kachikoshi requirement.
