Kalashnikov or Kalachnikov is a common Russian surname. The name literally means "belonging to (= son of) the kalach-man", where kalach (from Tatar: to be hungry) is the Russian word for a specific type of twisted white bread. In former times the term applied to any kind of white bread, which was classed as fancy. In Russian, the sequence chn tends to be pronounced as shn.
