Kenneth Oppel was born on August 31, 1967 in Port Alberni in British Columbia. While born in Port Alberni, he spent his childhood in Victoria and Halifax. Oppel published his first book, Colin's Fantastic Video Adventure, in 1985, and written while a high school student in Victoria. After writing the book, Oppel sent the book to his favorite author, Roald Dahl, who reccomended it to his agent. He would also marry his wife, now Philippa Oppel. After his marriage, Oppel moved to England while Philippa worked on her Ph.D. at Oxford, and wrote a number of books during that period, receiving a number of ideas by acting as a typist for student's papers. Oppel also began to write a number of screenplays, though so far none have been used in a global theater format.
