Kevin Phillips (footballer)
Kevin Phillips (born July 25, 1973 in Hitchin) is an English footballer who currently plays for Southampton. He holds the Sunderland A.F.C. record for most post-war goals, breaking a record previously set by Gary Rowell.
"Super Kev" was a hero at Sunderland, and his notorious striking partnership with targetman Niall Quinn was one of the most feared in the Football League. Phillips' ability to poach goals made him a central figure in Sunderland's most successful Premiership campaigns. After the decline of the club he moved to Southampton where he promises to recapture his old form.
The highlight of his career was his 30 Premier League goals for Sunderland in the 1999-2000 season which earned him the European Golden Shoe. The pick of these goals was a magnificent lob in a 2-1 win at Newcastle United.
Despite his success on club level, Phillips has not been able to score in eight caps for the English national team, although why he was never allowed to play a full ninety minutes for his country remains a mystery.
