The project, completely financed by Saudi Arabian money, cost a total of USD $1.2 billion. The four lane road (25 m) is 25-26 km long and used 350,000 m³ of concrete along with 147,000 t of reinforcing steel. The causeway officially opened for public use on November 25th 1986.
