Kurt Herbert Adler
Kurt Herbert Adler was an American conductor born in Austria.
Born 2 April, 1905, he was an assistant to Arturo Toscanini at the Salzburg Festival in 1936. Following the Nazi occupation of Austria in 1938, he was forced as a Jew to leave and went to San Francisco. He was artistic, then general, director of the San Francisco Opera from 1953 to 1982, where he greatly raised their standards. He died in San Francisco on 9 February, 1988.
