Lackawanna County is a county located in the state of Pennsylvania. As of 2000, the population is 213,295.

Lackawanna County was created on August 13, 1878 from part of Luzerne County making it the last new county to be created in the state. It was named for the Lackawanna River.

Its county seat is Scranton6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,203 km² (465 mi²). 1,188 km² (459 mi²) of it is land and 15 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.27% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 213,295 people, 86,218 households, and 55,783 families residing in the county. The population density is 180/km² (465/mi²). There are 95,362 housing units at an average density of 80/km² (208/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.65% White, 1.31% Black or African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.75% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.53% from other races, and 0.66% from two or more races. 1.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 86,218 households out of which 27.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.90% are married couples living together, 11.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.30% are non-families. 31.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the county, the population is spread out with 21.80% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 26.40% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 19.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 89.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.40 males.
