Land Speed Record (album)

Hüsker Dü's Land Speed Record was the band's first full-length record, a fast and furious hardcore workout from 1981 that bears almost no resemblance to the melodic postpunk that the band became known for in the mid 80's. The title has a double meaning, referencing both the band's ability to play as fast as they can (there's 17 songs crammed into 27 minutes) and their penchant for speed of the amphetamine pill variety. While Land Speed Record isn't considered top-notch Hüsker Dü by anybody, not even the band members, there are some enjoyable moments; "Don't Try To Call" is one of their catchiest early songs, the hardcore version of "Gilligan's Island" is a riot, while Hart's "Data Control" conjures up a creepy musical mood that matches the paranoia of the lyrics. With low-fi sound quality and uneven song quality, LSR is most useful as a period piece, essential for diehard Hüsker Dü fans only.
