Landmannalaugar

Landmannalaugar (is., meaning the hot springs of the people of (the) land) is a region near the volcano Hekla in the south of Iceland.

The region lies in the Highlands of Iceland and is said to be one of the most beautiful of Iceland because of its various volcanoes and the ensuing special colouring of the landscape. Grey and blue ashes as well as black lava is found at the volcano Bláhnjúkur. Red, brown and yellow are seen for example at the sides of another volcano next to it, the Brennisteinsalda. An obsidian lava field reaches from the sulfur hot springs near this mountain down to the river and the hut of the Icelandic Hiking Club. There people are taking a bath in a naturally heated little river. Sometimes you have to watch out, not to touch the river bottom to much: It is like a bed of hot charcoals.

A very famous hiking trail, Laugarvegur, leads from here to Þórsmörk and over a mountain pass, Fimmvörðuháls down to Skógar.

Near Landmannalaugar lies the lake Frostastaðavatn.
