Leland Stanford, Jr.
Leland Stanford, Jr. (May 14, 1868-March 13, 1884), Leland Dewitt Stanford until age nine, was the son of Governor Leland Stanford of California and his wife Jane Stanford and the namesake of Stanford University in the United States. Leland, Jr. died of typhoid two months before his sixteenth birthday, while on the Grand Tour of Europe, and his parents devoted their fortune to a memorial in his honor. He is buried with his parents at the Stanford family mausoleum on the Stanford campus.
